Your hair is a fantastic creation that grows even through the most severely damaged scalp conditions. Of course, there are always exceptions to the rule like in cases of illness-related hair growth problems.
Our hair can grow on its own without any help like it was created and designed to, but will it be healthy, voluminous, thick, lustrous and all the other good things it has to offer? of course not. Hair, just like your body, needs sustenance and added nutrients, and the good old TLC.
The beauty of hair is that when you take care of it, feed it, love it, and nurture it, well the results speak for themselves. So, what DIY hair treatments do, is boost your hair, and give it that additional vitamin or nutrient boost where it may have been insufficient. It does not mean that once you use these treatments your hair will sprout like wildfire and give you several inches overnight, or over a few weeks. Nope, sorry to disappoint but it doesn't work that way. And it's okay if you believed it at first, cause I know I desperately wanted it to be true when I was transitioning.
My hair was too damaged and even with these treatments, I couldn't get back the hair I used to have. So I did the big chop and sought out these miraculous treatments once more, hoping I could escape the TWA. Well, you can imagine how that went. I had to wait three years to get some length I could actually flex.
The first year was hard, and I'm glad it got easier once I accepted that DIY hair treatments do not grow my hair super fast or anything like that. It's a huge burden off your shoulders once you know that the answer is your hard work and commitment to the health of your hair. Health first before length.
DIY Hair Treatments
The first year of my hair journey was a series of one DIY treatment after the other. I tried so many of them and so often sometimes I wonder where I got so much time from. These hair treatments are meant to be a supplement to your hair routine, not the bread and butter. They boost the hair follicles, hair shaft, and the oldest part of your hair, the ends. From root to tip, there are treatments for every aspect of your hair.
DIY hair treatments are great for your hair. They strengthen, nourish, add moisture, repair, and aid in the growth of healthy hair. The natural proteins and vitamins found in avocado and eggs give hair the strength, moisture, and vibrancy it needed. The good in treatments speaks for itself.
There are treatments for dandruff, thinning, dry scalp, itchiness, hair growth, thickness, lost edges, balding, hair breakage, and a whole lot of other problems that you face during your hair journey. What you should do is find the treatment that suits your current situation and use it to treat your hair. The old adage, 'too much of something is never good,' is also very real in this case too.
Avocado + egg mask
Ingredients are an avocado, three tablespoons of olive oil, two tablespoons of honey, and one egg to mix together completely. Scrambling the egg first then mixing with the avocado, honey, and oil. Mix the contents very well. The consistency does not matter, all the bits will have to be washed out.
Apply the mask to slightly wet hair, and massage it into your head. Ensuring root to tip is covered by the hair mask. Use a plastic cap to cover your head and leave it for about 30 to 45 minutes. Rinse out with warm water, ensuring that all bits are washed out. Dry your hair and moisturize it as you normally would. Repeat this treatment twice a month.
This was one of the treatments I stuck to after I tried most of them and I enjoyed how my hair felt full of life and soft afterward. This DIY hair treatment also helped with strengthening my hair when it got too dried out from the hot summer sun or harsh winter winds. It is especially great when a new season comes, helping your hair adapt to the gradual changes.
Caution on Overuse
Don't overuse these treatments. I practically abused my hair and the treatments with how excessively I was using them in my first year after the big chop. Every two days I did a treatment, sometimes it was every day for an entire week nonstop. It wasn't always the same treatment, sometimes it would be onion juice on Monday, avocado mask Tuesday, egg mask Wednesday, cucumber and yogurt conditioner on Thursday, onion juice and apple cider vinegar cleanse on Friday, castor oil and coconut oil treatment on Saturday, and washday on Sunday.
I think everyone sees the problem here right? The entire week my hair didn't get a break, it was washed or rinsed almost every day. How in the world was I planning on seeing the real results? Which DIY hair treatment can I claim actually worked? Which DIY treatment was good or bad for my hair? What were the effects of any of these treatments or did they just cancel each other out? These are the sort of things you have to consider and be aware of. So I stopped started committing to one particular hair mask for three months at least, to get the real benefits from the treatment. It is not for long-term use, only a temporary aid for your hair.
