Stretching Hair with Two-Strand Twists + Banding

Updated: Nov 16, 2022

Shrinkage can be the biggest frustration you'll ever face through your natural hair journey as much as is it the biggest indicator of your hair's health. Sometimes, this makes doing most things difficult like styling your hair, washing it, or moisturizing it. It makes a simple job turn into a mountain-sized problem. Stretching your hair is the only logical solution to your hair's shrinkage. It is when you use certain styles to elongate your hair strands from their natural curl pattern. There are several methods or ways to stretch your hair, twists, banding, buns, etc, and today we will look at two-strand twists and banding.

It is crucial to understand that stretching your hair is a means to make your hair management process or routine easier. Adding moisture to your hair is easier when you already have your hair elongated and not coiled up into a crowded mass of hair.

I used two-strand twists and banding for two reasons: first, twists allow for a second style after it has been done. Second, the period my hair stays stretched for is longer than it normally would be when I use two stretching methods at the same time. So this gives me the extra day or two of length I needed on most occasions when I wanted to extend the length I got from stretching it.

It's time to say goodbye to that shrinkage and hello to stretched hair Don't get me wrong, shrinkage is beautiful and is your hair's superpower. To stretch your natural curl pattern you have to use certain styles, and twists are one of them. It can either be two-strand twists or three-strand twists or flat twists any twists really. Let's take a look at how to stretch our hair following the video or the steps below.

Simple steps for Twists and Banding

Step 1: Spritz hair with water or add moisturizers. Part hair into sections, as many or as little as you desire. Four, two, or 10 sections are fine, or more.

Step 2: Take a single section then divide it into two equal parts. A comb can be used for cleaner and neat straight lines, but freehand is no problem if you don't mind the messy look.

Step 3: Cross one of the equally divided parts over the other, doing this repeatedly until the end where you can twirl the ends on your finger to close them up. That's all you have to do, then repeat with every section of hair you have made until your entire head of hair is complete.

Banding Twisted Hair

Step 1: Grab 1-3 twists and hold them together with one hand. The number of twists may be more or less depending on the hair's length.

Step 2: With another hand grab a hair tie, hair band, or scrunchie and start tying it down the length of the twists.

Step 3: Continue with a new hair tie if it runs out in the middle. Curl the ends in. Repeat for all sections until all your twists have been banded.

Stretching Facts

Stretched hair allows you to flex that length and flaunt those luscious curls. Letting those curls free once in a while to show off that beautiful hair can be a revitalizing feeling. Stretching your hair maximizes the length of your hair but without the damaging factors that come from stretching with heat.

Two-strand twists are one of the simplest forms of heatless hair stretching. They are the absolute best when it comes to the potential for protective styling, stretching, or second styling on your hair. Two-strand twists are easy to do too and to give them the extra stretch, using the banding method, your hair's curls can be lengthened and displayed for the best effect.

It is also necessary to be aware of the amount of hair you can stretch, the volume and thickness, and the curl pattern may yield different outcomes every time. Everyone has unique hair features and characteristics that are only specific to you. Thus end results will differ from what someone else may have compared to yours.
